After a series of unimpressive displays, Mourinho decided to drop Rooney to the bench and instead gave the No.10 role to Juan Mata. Starting as a substitute in United’s last three fixtures does hint towards Rooney’s newly reduced role at Manchester United and places question marks over his future at the club.
Recent reports suggest the Man United boss is looking to bring Isco to Old Trafford after the Spaniard has expressed his unhappiness with his lack of matches at Real Madrid.
“I’m 24 and if I don’t find a place in the starting line-up, I’d like to move.” Isco told Cope Radio in Spain earlier this week.
“I know what I can do well and if not here, then I’d like to be able to do it elsewhere. I’m happy in Madrid, but what footballers want is to progress and if I can’t here, I wouldn’t have a problem in looking for an exit.”
The 24-year old who seems to have fallen out of favour at the Bernabeu is open for a move to another club if he is promised more game time and United might look to make the most of this opportunity with Tottenham, Arsenal, Juventus, Milan and Malaga all wanting to secure the Spaniard’s services next season.
In the three games United have started with Rooney on the bench, the Red Devils have won two and drawn one against Stoke last Sunday. We’ve looked much more threatening without the 30-year old and have managed to play with much more flair and pace, leading to calls for Mourinho to continue playing teams without him.
There will come a point when Rooney does leave United and having seen a new look team without him in it already this season, maybe that move will finally happen this summer after years of speculation.
