Having fallen out of favour at Man United since the arrival of Jose Mourinho, Darmian has only started against Feyenoord which has called into question his future with the Italian national side.
That seems to be the main motivation behind all of the reports over the last two weeks about Darmian wanting to leave and they are now growing in intensity.
Darmian’s agent commented on the situation and confirmed a January exit was possible, so it certainly looks plausible that he could return to Serie A and leave United after only a couple of years at Old Trafford.
What do I make of the situation? I think he’d have every right to quit to be honest. Antonio Valencia is not a right-back and never will be; he might be in decent form at the moment but the qualities Darmian showed last season prior to his collapse away to Arsenal showed me that he could be an excellent right-back for us. Yet, Mourinho hasn’t given him his chance.
Not every player will get equal opportunities and unfortunately for Darmian that’s seen him on the bench more often than not and unless something does change between now and January which brings him into the team, he may well be heading back to Italy soon.
