Manchester United had plenty of players in action with their respective international countries on Saturday.
Jesse Lingard made his debut for England in a 2-0 win over Malta. He completed the full 90 minutes and although he didn’t score or get an assist, he received plenty of praise for how he played.
Wayne Rooney also started but continued his string of recently muted performances in a match he was outshone by Jordan Henderson. Conversely, Marcus Rashford came off the bench and was just as exciting as he has been with Man United in an excellent 20 minutes. Chris Smalling was an unused substitute on the bench.
Eric Bailly played the full 90 minutes in Ivory Coast’s 3-1 win over Mali in a World Cup qualifier. Probably the best thing about this match is the mere fact Bailly wears the No.9 shirt. That’s all sorts of wrong.
On Friday, Marouane Fellaini‘s Belgium beat Bosnia 4-0. He was used in a holding midfield by Roberto Martinez and picked up a booking in the dying stages of the game.
Anthony Martial was an unused substitute for France but Paul Pogba completed the whole match, although he was criticised quite openly after another game which passed by without him really stamping his identity on it.
Daley Blind started at left-back for Netherlands in their 4-1 drubbing of Belarus. He’s very comfortable in that role and that was clear to see. Unfortunately for Memphis Depay, he was an unused substitute.
