Manchester United set to offer Juan Mata a new deal – report

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United are set to offer Juan Mata a new long-term contract after becoming an integral player under Jose Mourinho, reports The Mirror.

Lots of Man United fans, myself included, expected Mata to be one of the first players who Mourinho sold because he let him join United from Chelsea as he didn’t fit his system at the time, despite being their double player of the year winner.

A couple of years on and Mata has now cemented himself as a key player under Mourinho at United, much to the delight of fans who all have a soft spot for the diminutive Spaniard and it sounds like he could be here for the long haul. If reports are correct, Mata will be given a new contract which will keep him at the club for another four years.

That would be a great move by United. Mata’s really growing in influence if you ask me; with Mourinho’s style, players are encouraged to follow their instincts and for a natural ball player like Mata that helps get the best out of his game. Defensively he’s still pretty poor but we’ve offset that by bringing in Paul Pogba and starting Ander Herrera more often which has boosted our strength in midfield, meaning Mata’s shortfalls are better covered.

I’d love to see Juan sign a new deal. He’s such a genuinely nice bloke and the rapport he’s built with fans hasn’t happened too often in the last few years. I just hope he can kick on and become even more influential to the point where he can be considered for United’s player of the year award in the future.
