Spain vs Albania: De Gea starts but Herrera waiting for debut

by Sam Peoples

David de Gea starts in goal for Spain tonight in their game against Albania but Ander Herrera is on the bench waiting to make his senior debut.

Having jostled with Iker Casillas for a couple of years over Spain’s No.1 spot, De Gea is now the undisputed first choice goalkeeper for his country as his career continues to go from strength to strength.

As for Herrera, his call-up this week was his first to the senior squad and he’ll be chomping at the bit to come off the bench to make his debut. I hope he does because it will mean so much to him.

It’s been a stellar season so far for Herrera under Jose Mourinho who has given him a new lease of life as a defensive midfielder for Manchester United and we all know how good De Gea is by now, even if he did make an uncharacteristic mistake in our 1-1 draw with Stoke.

We’ll bring you reports of their performances later on after Spain’s game with Albania.
