Wayne Rooney will be left on the bench for England’s World Cup Qualifier in Slovenia, according to Sky Sports.

Gareth Southgate will be likely to name Eric Dier and Jordan Henderson as his two deep-lying central midfielders after Rooney’s average showing against Malta.

The Englishman was booed by sections of Wembley against Malta and the position of the team’s captain has come under heavy criticism.

Having lost his place in the starting XI at Manchester United it’s all going from bad to worse for Rooney.

His recent showings haven’t justified his spot in the side and with others showcasing they have plenty to offer, he’ll have to work hard to fight for his place.

It’s a shame to see a club legend left on the bench, but he needs to feel the competition for his place in the side, rather than being allowed into the starting XI without performing.

David Moyes and Louis van Gaal seemed afraid to drop such a big player at Old Trafford, but Mourinho has come in, identified the problem and immiedietly tried to fix it.

Rooney has confirmed he will retired from international football after the 2018 FIFA World Cup but at this point it doesn’t look like he’ll even be selected for the tournament
