Eric Cantona: Manchester United can be champions under Jose Mourinho

Former Manchester United great Eric Cantona has backed Jose Mourinho to get the squad back to challenging for titles.

The club last won the Premier League title in 2013 and since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, have finished seventh, fourth and fifth.

Their only major trophy came last season under Louis van Gaal with the FA Cup just days before he was relieved of his duties at the club.

Speaking about Man United, Cantona claims they can still be champions under Mourinho.

“It’s just the beginning. Manchester can still be champions. Jose Mourinho is a successful manager at a successful club which this year has successful players,” he said.

“But this is an extremely difficult championship, full of great teams and great managers like (Manchester City coach) Pep Guardiola.”

Mourinho got the club off to the perfect start with three straight wins, but after slumping to back-to-back defeats, will be hoping to get the campaign back on track.

United are now in sixth place in the Premier League with 12 points after seven matches and will be looking to build on impressive performances against Leicester City and Stoke City.

The side come up against the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City after the international break and it’ll be a big test for the squad.
