Jose Mourinho got his team selection completely wrong against Manchester City this season and he knows he can’t afford to make the same mistakes at Anfield on Monday night.
So, when I’m looking at what I think our strongest XI is and it includes Jesse Lingard and Henrikh Mkhitaryan again there might be a few eyebrows raised seeing as they were both so poor against City in the derby.
But it’s a different situation now. We need Lingard’s energy off the ball in this game and he’s in good form off the back of making his senior England debut. As for Mkhitaryan, that’s a little bit of a risk but in the context of this match and how I think Liverpool are going to play, I think we need him over Juan Mata.
Lots of the rest of the team picks itself, maybe apart from bringing Luke Shaw in at left-back and moving Daley Blind in the middle. I think this is the perfect game to use Blind for because there won’t be a lot of balls over the top behind him, it’s all going to be on the floor with intricate passing. That’s when his intelligence and nous come to the fore and we’ll need Blind to help us maintain as much possession as possible.
Shaw up against Mane is a no brainer for me as well as is starting Ander Herrera alongside Paul Pogba in midfield. All in all, I think this is our strongest XI and we’ve still got the likes of Mata, Martial and Rooney on the bench. Not bad if you ask me.
