Italy legend Gianluigi Buffon has revealed why criticism of his former Juventus teammate Paul Pogba makes him smile.
Pogba has made a slow start to life in England following his return to Old Trafford and hasn’t lived up to the expectations of fans after becoming the world’s most expensive player.
Buffon won four successive Serie A titles in the same Juventus side as Pogba, where the Frenchman built his reputation as one of the best midfielders in football.
Speaking about Pogba, Buffon claims it’s still too early to judge his ability.
“Seasons are long, they last 10 or 11 months and we’re just into the second month. I very often smile, because from September, people say to me that Pogba doesn’t do things well and that Pogba isn’t good,” he said.
“There are still eight months to go before the end of the season, and it’s at the end that we can draw conclusions. It’s like horse racing, you only see the winners at the end, not the start.”
It’s only normal for a player of Pogba’s worth to come under criticism following a move to a club like Man United, but fans have already seen glimpses of his ability and it’s only set to get better.
At the age of 23, Pogba has an incredible career ahead of him at Old Trafford and there is still plenty of development in line.
He’ll be hoping to prove his talent against Jurgen Klopp’s in-form Liverpool side after showcasing his talent on the main stage while on international duty with France.
