Anthony Martial has had an indifferent season so far but he’s ready to face Liverpool at Anfield tonight in a game where Manchester United fans hope he stamps his identity on our season.
Aside from his wonderful goal against Stoke City in the last game week, Martial’s been muted in comparison to the player who took centre stage in his debut season under Louis van Gaal but we all know he’s got match winning quality, and Liverpool know it all too well.
Of course it was against Liverpool on his debut where Martial announced himself with arguably still his best goal in a Man United shirt and at Anfield tonight, if he starts, he’s going to be one of our biggest danger men up against a very defensively inconsistent Liverpool side.
I’d love nothing more than to see Martial brush off the cobwebs and find the sort of form which made him pretty much unplayable last year and I think it’s a case of when, not if, he does find that. Liverpool away would be the perfect occasion for him to do so as far as fans are concerned but there is no harder game for United in the season, so he’ll have to bring his A-game if he is to find his feet properly.
All in all, it’s been a season of distractions for Martial so far. Minor injuries and a messy break-up with his former wife have given him lots to deal with off the pitch – least not newspapers (The Mirror) literally making up interviews with him, something which he’s understandably not happy with.
I’ve got every confidence in Martial turning the screw at some point. Maybe that will come at Anfield and I really hope it is but up until the point where he really does find his form again, Martial will get nothing but support from United fans even if the wider press are more interested in putting more pressure on his shoulders.
