Manchester United 4-1 Fenerbahce: Player ratings

by Sam Peoples

David de Gea 7 – Standard seven for not falling asleep until the 80th minute when Fenerbahce came alive. Could do nothing for Fenerbahce’s goal but made a smart save soon after.

Matteo Darmian 6.5 – Confident start from a player who was only making his second start this season. Played the full 90 minutes too which he desperately needed.

Eric Bailly 6 – Not as indomitable as normal but didn’t really need to be.

Chris Smalling 6 – Thought he was a little shaky tonight but the fact Jose Mourinho took him off makes it seem he’ll start at Stamford Bridge.

Luke Shaw 6 – Quiet night for Shaw who was returning from injury.

Michael Carrick 7.5 – These are the sort of games which remind you how good Carrick was in his pomp. With so much space in possession he was devastating with his forward passes.

Paul Pogba 8.5 – After a slow start, Pogba scored a perfect penalty and a wonderful curler into the top corner in a first half he came to life. That’s what we’ve been waiting to see.

Juan Mata 8 – Another confident performance from Mata who is thriving whenever he plays. Lovely touch for our first penalty, wonderful pass for our second.

Jesse Lingard 8.5 – Very smart play from him for Pogba’s goal. Deserves credit. Then he built on that with a wonderful goal in the second half, he certainly showcased his finishing there.

Anthony Martial 7 – An excellent penalty to give United a comfortable 2-0 lead and had good moments overall.

Wayne Rooney 7 – Felt Rooney played well tonight. Looked like a real team player and even allowed Pogba the penalty to get his penalty. Deserves credit for that performance.

Memphis Depay 5 – Really needed to do well with his chance but simply didn’t. Disappointed.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah 7 – Played in midfield and I loved seeing him there in his natural position, so he gets a 7.
