The Scot had a beaming smile on his face as he applauded van Persie’s consolation goal for Fenerbahce and the whole of Old Trafford joined in with a standing ovation for the Dutchman.
You never want to see somebody score against Man United but if there was anybody you wanted to score tonight then it was definitely van Persie. He absolutely deserved that standing ovation from 70,000 fans inside Old Trafford and I hope it meant a lot to him because he meant so much to us.
That debut season from van Persie in Fergie’s last year in charge will long be remembered as one of the best ever debut campaigns from a United player, and his goals that season are some of my favourite recent memories of United.
Maybe if Fergie was still in charge van Persie would be a United player right now but regardless of that it’s still lovely to see that round of applause from Old Trafford.
