Danny Mills has slammed Manchester United defender Chris Smalling for his disastrous display against Chelsea.
He was wearing the captain’s armband at Stamford Bridge, but had a horrendous day at the back as Antonio Conte’s side netted four goals on his watch, the worst part being all goals came as a result of unpardonable defensive errors by United.
Man United’s thrashing was down to a complete collapse at the back and Mills believes the defender lost his head after his shocking performance.
“I am not sure what Smalling is doing. You have to mark your man until the ball is cleared.
“I am not sure where his head is? He has to get it together.”
Smalling’s defensive awareness seemed to be all over the place as Conte’s men ran rings around him at Stamford Bridge.
The 26-year-old failed to close down Pedro which led to the first goal, he then left Gary Cahill unmarked which resulted in a free header for Chelsea’s second and their last two goals came after defensive mistakes.
While there is still a long way to go in the season, Smalling as well as other United players will need to get their act together if they want to have a real go at closing the gap early.
They face rivals Manchester City in the EFL Cup and the players will want to make a strong statement on Wednesday.
