Manchester United defender Phil Jones was delighted after making his long-awaited return from injury during the 3-1 victory over Swansea City.
He hadn’t featured since January’s home win over Bob Bradley’s side and was named in the starting line-up for the game at Liberty Stadium.
Fans weren’t feeling optimistic ahead of the game with a number of injuries impacting Jose Mourinho‘s side, however Jones put in a commanding performance on Sunday night.
Speaking after the game, Jones was delighted to be back in action for United.
“I’m delighted to have started,” he said.
“I worked hard to get to where I am, it’s been a difficult few months. Watching the lads play and not being able to be involved was tough, but today was a really good feeling for me.
“It’s been a nightmare. It’s been difficult for me but all I can do is keep plugging away and never give up. Today is an example; I’ve worked so hard to get back and play in games like that. It’s what I love doing. I just want to play as many games as possible, if the manager sees that I’m fit enough to play and doing a good job for him, I’m delighted to be playing again.”
Jones has had a nightmare spell on the sidelines and after an impressive performance on Sunday night, has gone the perfect way about earning a regular place in the side with the likes of Eric Bailly, Daley Blind, Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling all out of action.
Mourinho confirmed Jones hadn’t even participated in a training session before featuring at Liberty Stadium and he would have proven he can be relied upon when the Portuguese boss needs him.
Hopes are he’s able to keep fit as United need to pick up where they left off after the international break.
