Joel Pereira has been named in WhoScored’s Liga NOS Team of the Week after starring for Belenenses during their win over Feirense last weekend.
The Portuguese, who has expressed a desire to climb the goalkeeper pecking order at Manchester United, joined the Portuguese side on a season-long loan over the summer.
Pereira, in the absence of first choice keeper Rafael Veloso, played a fundamental part in sealing a 1-0 smash and grab win at Feirense, making a string of excellent stops.
The 20-year-old, as a result, earned a place in WhoScored’s Liga NOS Team of the Week.
This was perhaps the biggest game of Pereira’s career to date. Prior to the encounter with Feirense, Belenenses sat awkwardly in 14th spot, just one point above the relegation zone after losing their last three games (defeats to Benfica and FC Braga saw Pereira struggle between the sticks). A win at Feirense, therefore, was vital.
The hosts, after going behind to an early goal that surprised everyone, went on to dominate proceedings, launching a constant stream of assaults on Pereira’s goal to no avail. Indeed, this was Pereira’s day: the 20-year-old, making just his third ever appearance in the Primera Liga, made nine saves, earning his side a crucial three points.
Man United fans will hope to see the 20-year-old keep his place in the starting XI over the coming months following this stellar performance.
