Matt Le Tissier urges Jose Mourinho to sell these eight Man United players

Former Southampton striker Matt Le Tissier has urged Jose Mourinho to sell Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Matteo Darmian, Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Memphis Depay.

Fellaini has made six Premier League appearances this season, but the other seven only have five Premier League starts between them this season.

It was reported last week that Mourinho was set to offload eight Manchester United players over the next two transfer windows.

Le Tissier believes the 53-year-old has plenty of deadwood to dispose of before he can truly implement his vision at Old Trafford.

“I think Manchester United need to let Phil Jones go, he’s just too injury-prone to rely on,” he said.

Marcos Rojo just hasn’t got the quality that Manchester United are used to.”

Matteo Darmian is another one who has failed to live up to his price tag, so I’d probably let him go.

“I don’t think Ashley Young has contributed enough. Marouane Fellaini doesn’t fit the bill.

“(Morgan Schneiderlin) was one of the Premier League’s best players in that role at Saints but it hasn’t worked out for him at United.

“I thought it was a strange one when they signed Bastian Schweinsteiger. They didn’t need somebody like him with the injuries he’s had, but that’s not to say he’s not a very good player.

“I don’t think Memphis Depay has delivered when he’s had the chances. Time for him to go.”

Arbitrarily rendering eight players – all internationals – as ‘not good enough’ is perhaps a bit too outlandish. The likes of Fellaini, Young, Schneiderlin and Darmian have all demonstrated their quality under Mourinho this season, and their presence could, as the season wears on, prove to be vital further down the line.

That said, this is still far from Mourinho’s desired squad. The Portuguese inherited a mixture of relics from a failed David Moyes and a failed Louis van Gaal era, all sapped of confidence and enterprise after three underwhelming years. This is an astronomical restructuring job and Mourinho will need to be characteristically ruthless when it comes to culling his squad.
