Reports surfaced on Friday that Chris Smalling faced a month on the sidelines with a broken toe which left Manchester United fans with their faces in their hands as Eric Bailly is already out for December.
Reuters quote a club representative with the following: “The manager (Jose Mourinho) says it is not true.”
It’s never a good thing for the club when contrasting stories like this emerge. On the one hand are the media purporting something and on the other are United directly denying it. It’s the sort of stuff we could do without really.
So, is it the press making up stories? Of course, it wouldn’t be the first time they had nor would it be the last. Or is it United attempting to save face with Mourinho by directly denying it? Someone is telling fibs, is it the media or the club?
As I said earlier, it’s the sort of questions and scrutiny United could really do without at the moment and I do hope United’s stance is correct because we’re struggling with senior options in defence. Although on the flip side that could mean we get to see more of Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Axel Tuanzebe, every cloud right?
