Juan Mata insists summer speculation that he would lose his squad number at Manchester United got to him.
The Spaniard was heavily linked with a summer move away from Old Trafford following Jose Mourinho‘s appointment in May.
However, he was worked hard to cement his place in the first-team under the Portuguese boss and has been one of our best performers of the season so far.
Speaking about his situation, Mata claims a change was never on the cards.
“It gets to you because even if you don’t read (the papers) then a friend or a family member calls you and says, ‘what is this, what is that, are you moving here, are you moving there?,” he said.
“There was a lot of things said that I didn’t like and they were not true. That was the big problem.
“They were saying that I was leaving, that I was going to this club, that I was speaking to this club, that I had conversations with the manager about this, that I was changing my number.
“A lot of things that were not true.”
It’s only normal for these things to impact players after they read the papers, but Mata has reacted in perfect fashion, proving his importance at the club under Mourinho.
He’s done a brilliant job of keeping his place in the team and even lead the side out as captain for the Burnley clash.
