Ivan Rakitic’s agent, Arturo Canales, has insisted that the Croat is happy at Barcelona amid rumours surrounding Manchester United’s reported interest in securing his signature.
The midfielder joined Barcelona in 2014 and quickly cemented himself as a fundamental aspect of Luis Enrique’s midfield, winning the Champions League in his first season at the Nou Camp.
It was reported earlier this season that Rakitic rejected offers from Man United, Juventus and Chelsea over the summer, insisting he was happy in Spain.
Canales, speaking earlier this week, reiterated these sentiments.
“Ivan is very happy at FC Barcelona, where he has been tremendously successful and has a contract with the club until 2019,” he said.
Jose Mourinho‘s interest in the likes of Rakitic and Marco Veratti is indicative of a ‘life after Michael Carrick‘ plan at Old Trafford. The 35-year-old, who has only featured six times this season, could only realistically play at this level for one more season.
And Mourinho, forever the supreme pragmatist, is already looking for a midfielder capable of enforcing a sense of composure and control at the base of midfield, giving Paul Pogba license to roam forward. Such a partnership, as we have already seen with the Frenchman and Carrick, can reap devastating results, but Mourinho will need to look elsewhere for an appropriate accomplice for Pogba.
