The 20-year-old, who completed his £57.6 million deal from Monaco last year, hadn’t started a game in the Premier League since United were beaten 3-1 by Watford back in September.
He has trained with Man United during the international break after he was dropped from France’s latest squad, Dider Deschamps claimed he was not working hard enough for club and country.
Speaking about his involvement, Mourinho has praised the Frenchman’s change in attitude.
“Valencia’s back, Herrera is back from suspension, Rashford and Martial, we have Ibrahimovic suspended, and I decided to leave Wayne on the bench,” he said.
“Everything is a process, I have to analyse everything, I prefer to say and to go with the way Martial trained with us for the past two weeks because he wasn’t selected for the France national team.
“He showed great desire to improve his levels.”
Martial received some heavy criticism before the game, especially after Gary Neville claimed he hadn’t been preforming since his move.
However, Louis van Gaal claimed Martial would have a bigger impact for the next manager at Old Trafford, and even though he has hit a rough patch under Mourinho, there is plenty of time for him to develop at the age of 20.
Hopes are he can keep his place in the starting XI and build on his performances under the Portuguese boss.spell
