Jose Mourinho has confirmed Michael Carrick will be offered a new contract at Manchester United.

There were questions over his future at Old Trafford as he struggled for minutes at the start of the campaign and he earlier claimed this could be his last season at Man United.

However, he has impressed the Portuguese boss with his showings and controlled the midfield once again against Arsenal on Saturday afternoon and is set to be offered a fresh one-year deal.

Speaking about the Englishman, Mourinho admitted he has always had love for him.

“Michael is 35 years old and it is very sad to know that time flies for every one of us,” he said.

“He is such a fantastic player and I’ve always loved him.

“It is just a pity instead of being his manager when he was 25, I am his manager when he is 35.”

His deal at the club ends this summer and it seems Mourinho has finally realised Carrick’s impact on the side as his performances get the best out of Paul Pogba.

He was mainly used in the Europa League at the start of the season, but after showcasing his talents, Mourinho has been forced into using his services in the Premier League.

Carrick started for United in their 1-1 draw against Arsenal at the weekend and Mourinho’s squad looked much stronger in the middle.
