Rio Ferdinand insists the world’s top players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi would never be caught in Wayne Rooney‘s situation.
The Englishman was pictured on his night out last week, drinking with guests at a wedding in Watford, just hours after England had beaten Scotland 3-0.
He has been heavily criticised for his actions while on duty with his country and shortly after released an apology for his antics.
Speaking about the situation, Ferdinand claims Rooney took it a step too far.
“If you look at the elite players like Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar and Bale etc,” he said.
“The difference with those players and Wayne and the mistake that he made is publicly doing it.
“You wouldn’t see those players out until five in the morning absolutely off their head.
“That’s because either they’re protecting themselves and doing it a different way or they’re completely football first and that governs their life.”
Rooney came on a substitute in United’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Saturday afternoon and hit out against critics after the game labelling his treatment as disgraceful.
He’s found himself in a difficult situation for club and country in recent times, losing his automatic starter status, and being pictured drunk wouldn’t have been a great look as supporters would have hoped to see him fighting for his place in both sides.
