Bailly has been missing since he injured his ligaments in Man United’s game against Chelsea and we’ve desperately missed his presence, although the return of Phil Jones has helped Jose Mourinho‘s options.
Speaking ahead of Feyenoord, Mourinho said Bailly would be back but the bad news is that he’ll just as quickly be out again due to the African Cup of Nations.
“He is working hard and will be back before the end of the year, for sure,” Mourinho said.
“But on 3 January he goes away for a month [to play in the African Cup of Nations].”
On the one hand it’s a real positive to hear Bailly will return sooner rather than later for United. Cracking, he’s been our best defender this season and we’re desperate to have him back. On the other hand, Bailly’s early return means United will lose him for the whole month of January as well which is terrible news and the club wouldn’t stand in his way of playing for Ivory Coast, something he’ll be keen to do.
Nobody expected Bailly to settle so quickly at United but his no nonsense style of defending was such a refreshing sight for United fans as we hadn’t seen that since the days of Nemanja Vidic. It was exactly the sort of domineering presence of defence desperately lacked and has since he’s been missing.
The sooner Bailly is back the better but it looks like we’ll have to wait until February before Eric is back in action properly. It’s going to be a long wait.
