Valencia was playing largely as a winger for Man during Mourinho’s time in Spain, but the 31-year-old has made the right-back role his own under the Portuguese boss.
His future at Old Trafford was coming into doubt under Louis van Gaal, however he has been one of our best performers so far this season and is the Man United player that has improved the most following Mourinho’s arrival in the summer.
Speaking about the Ecuadorian, Mourinho claims he has the most to offer on the side.
“I tried to sign Antonio a number of years ago, when I was at Madrid,” he said. “Even though he was not playing right-back at the time, I thought he could be phenomenal in that position. As it was, United told me ‘no chance!’
“I am not surprised by his form this season. He has been clean of injuries, save for an operation on his arm which did not keep him out for long, and I have also been able to keep him fresh by resting him in certain Europa League games.
“I think he is the right-back to give us the maximum we can in terms of our attacking football.”
He was expected to be out for longer following his surgery, but Valencia returned against Arsenal earlier in the week and put in a spectacular Man of the Match performance.
Hopes are he can continue his impressive form and keep fit as he has played a vital role for Man United this season.
