The Frenchman wasn’t even named on the bench for the 4-0 victory over Feyenoord at Old Trafford, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan impressing in the advanced midfield role.
Mkhitarayn hadn’t featured since the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City back in September and it was brilliant to see him back in action as he took the opportunity with both hands.
Speaking about the 20-year-old, Mourinho claims he is fit and available for Sunday’s clash against West Ham.
“He [Martial] was okay for this game, it was just an option [not to pick him],” said Mourinho.
“He played last Sunday, I cannot play with 12 players, I cannot use on the bench 19 or 20.
“You wanted to see Mkhitaryan, I wanted too. I cannot play all of them at the same time so it was just an option.
“Players have to win their positions. They are friends, they are colleagues, they work together every day, but at the end they compete between themselves to have more chances to play.
“Anthony played against Arsenal; this was the moment to give a chance to Mkhitaryan to start.”
Martial has struggled to replicate his form from last season under Louis van Gaal, where he was one of the club’s most influential attackers and a combination of incidents on and off the pitch have stopped him from reaching his true potential.
Hopes are Mourinho can continue to ease him back into football and get the best out of him as he has a big future ahead of him at Old Trafford.
