Martial became Man United’s most influential player last season under Louis van Gaal after announcing himself with a wonderful goal on his debut against Liverpool.
So far under Mourinho it hasn’t worked out completely for Martial and speaking about his situation, Jose pointed towards a real competition for places which is making it more difficult for every player in the squad.
He said: “Probably Anthony was feeling more comfortable playing that way, at that intensity, at that rhythm of the ball – possession and ball circulation. So he probably needs some time.
“We have Mkhitaryan, Lingard, Depay, Mata, Rashford and Martial – these are the positions where we have more options,” the boss said.
“You have one opportunity, maybe two or three. If you don’t bite, somebody comes and takes the meat.”
We’ve seen flashes of brilliance from Martial but nowhere near the levels of consistency he showed under van Gaal. However, fans aren’t getting on his back because we all know he’s had a bit of a tough summer following a messy break-up with his wife as well as a poor Euro 2016 with France. After the success of his first year with United, it was a reality check for Martial which clearly affected him.
It’s all down to Mourinho and how he can manage Martial to get the best out of him. He’s doing the same process with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and we saw against Feyenoord how good he was so fans are hoping to see the same from Martial soon.
I’m a big fan of Martial. I don’t think there is anybody else who can play the left-wing better than him, even though I’d rather see him up front, and sooner rather than later this season he’ll be starting most of our games in the Premier League where he’ll hopefully tear it up once again.
