Jose Mourinho is keen for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to replicate the level of performance he showed against Feyenoord in the Premier League.
Mkhitaryan made only his second start for Man United on Thursday in the Europa League and shone with what was a stunning showing, so much so that Old Trafford gave him a standing ovation when he was taken off.
Looking at the West Ham game on Saturday, fans want to see Mkhitaryan start and Mourinho clearly wants to see the Armenian midfielder step up to the plate as well.
Speaking about Henrikh he said: “He just needs now to replicate this kind of performance in the Premier League. The Premier League is different – he needs one more step. Obviously now confidence levels are higher.
“This performance gives him the right to believe that he can play the next match again and he needs to replicate this kind of performance in the Premier League with more physicality and more aggression.
“He needs a little bit more of that but the quality – we know why we bought him, we know we were buying a player with a high level of technical quality. [He is] very intelligent and very bright, the way he reads the game, so good for him because the performance was good.”
Mkhitaryan did everything fans wanted to see from him against Feyenoord. Quick passing, incisive movement and tricky footwork typified a performance which made it almost impossible for Feyenoord defenders to get the ball off him. He was unplayable.
Only Wayne Rooney played better than Mkhitaryan in my opinion and I really want to see him start against West Ham on Saturday. Momentum is everything in football and after that performance I can’t fathom a reason why Henrikh would be dropped, not after he played so well, so here’s hoping he does start.
Just like Paul Pogba, it’s a case of when and not if Mkhitaryan will shine for United and that may well happen this weekend in front of the Old Trafford faithful.
