Quinton Fortune: Jose Mourinho has to start Henrikh Mkhitaryan against West Ham

by Tanveer Arayan

Former Manchester United winger Quinton Fortune has urged Jose Mourinho to start Henrikh Mkhitaryan against West Ham United in the EFL Cup quarter-final.

Following Sunday’s 1-1 draw in the Premier League, Slaven Bilic’s men return to Old Trafford in a clash which must be settled, with extra-time and penalties a possibility.

With Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini suspended, and Michael Carrick said to be injured, Jose Mourinho is facing a nightmare with his team selection.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Fortune has ordered Mourinho to give Mkhitaryan a chance.

“For me, Mkhitaryan’s got to start,” he said.

“He needs games and brings that extra imagination in there.

“I’ve gone for Marcus Rashford on the right and Anthony Martial coming in on the left, being positive with their pace that will hopefully cause West Ham problems.

Michael Carrick’s got to come in but instead of two ‘sitters’ [holding midfielders], I would just have one – if you look at West Ham, they only have one player up front.”

He has seriously impressed supporters at Man United, especially after Mourinho claimed that the Armenian was struggling for confidence since his move for Borussia Dortmund.

Mkhitaryan opened up play against Feyenoord, drifted in between defenders and made chances, if that’s a player struggling to cope with the intensity of football in England then I’d love to see what he’s capable of once he finds his feet.
