Santos manager Dorival Junior has confirmed the Brazilian side’s interest in signing Bastian Schweinsteiger in January.
He is being lined up as a marquee signing for Santos, after he is yet to feature for Man United this season under Jose Mourinho.
Although he was named on the bench for the 1-1 draw with West Ham on Sunday, it has taken the Portuguese boss until late November to name him in a matchday squad for the first time.
Speaking about their interest, Junior reveals they have held talks over the German international.
“I told them we should try to get a big name in world football or at least send an invitation,” he said.
“It was just a recommendation. It won’t hurt us to try. We didn’t only speak about Schweinsteiger, but other players too.
“A player like that can lift the level of the team but he has to come with an objective and an appetite.”
He was heavily linked with a move to MLS side Chicago Fire, but it seems like he has attracted interest from a number of clubs.
If he won’t be given the opportunity to play at Old Trafford, Bastian deserves to pick up regular football at a club where he is wanted.
After a highly-decorated career at the highest level of football, it’ll be interesting to see where we’ll see him in action next.
