Martial scored two in Manchester United’s 4-1 win over West Ham and was in scintillating form akin to how he played last season, much to the delight of fans who have been waiting to see that from the Frenchman.
It’s been a tough start to the season for Martial under Mourinho but Jose believes the happiness brought back by his goalscoring exploits will be key in how he kicks on for the rest of the season.
“He is working harder than before, to be honest,” Mourinho said.
“When you score goals I think it helps for happiness to be back. As an attacking player you can play very, very well, but if there are no goals then the happiness is not there.”
You saw how much of a spring Martial had in his step against West Ham – their defence couldn’t get anywhere near him and he ran with confidence at West Ham’s players. That’s the Martial we grew to love in his debut season and one we’ve been waiting to see again.
I’ve got no doubt that both Martial and Henrikh Mkhitarayan should be in United’s starting XI when fit. They are lethal and have the potential to make United’s one of the best in the league when combined with Juan Mata and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Like United’s season, Martial is yet to kick into top gear but with Mourinho and the fans’ support he looks like he is starting to get that engine running again.
