Anthony Martial has explained how his brace for Manchester United against West Ham in the EFL Cup gave him a real confidence boost.
The Frenchman has endured a difficult start to the season at Old Trafford and has also been dropped from Didier Deschamps’ French squad in recent times.
He’s been in and out of the team, but managed to double his tally for the season with two goals against West Ham on Wednesday night.
Speaking about the impact, Martial is hoping it will kick-start his season.
“Firstly, it felt great to score in the week as I’ve not played that regularly of late,” he said.
“It was good to get those two goals as it’s a real confidence boost – hopefully we can take that into the game on Sunday.
“We’ve had a lot of draws recently and have come up against goalkeepers in amazing form.
“But we’ve worked really hard to improve our efficiency and effectiveness in front of goal and hopefully that will pay off.”
Watching him in action against West Ham, it was like seeing him back under Louis van Gaal last season, where he announced himself to the world with a spectacular debut campaign in England.
Hopes are his goal can provide him with the momentum needed moving forward to cement his place in Mourinho’s starting XI and re-find his brilliant form.
