He has scored just seven goals for Man United since Louis van Gaal brought him to the club in 2015 from PSV Eindhoven.
The Dutchman arrived at the club with high expectations following his PSV showreel, but he has struggled to make a mark on the side.
Speaking about Memphis, Hoek claims he still needs more chances to prove what he’s capable of.
“Memphis is still young and all the expectations were very high for him,” he said. “He has not shown yet what he is capable of.
“He did very well for us in the last game against Luxembourg where he scored two very important goals and he played well.
“He showed, also, what he is still capable of. Give him more time to show himself. He is a special talent.”
Mourinho’s arrival was an opportunity for Memphis to kickstart his career at Old Trafford, but he’s still only managed to start one game this season.
Memphis fired PSV to the Eredivisie title as the league’s top goal scorer, and although he has showcased glimpses of his ability with United, particularly in Europe, he hasn’t been able to perform on a consistent basis.
The fact that he’s only had a few minutes at the end of games to prove himself hasn’t helped his confidence and a loan move to Everton would help his development, but anything permanent, could see United miss out on a seriously talented player.
