Up until a few weeks ago, Schweinsteiger found himself frozen out of everything at Man United – so much so that he had to train on his own away from the first-team.
However, a remarkable turnaround saw him rejoin training, be part of a match day squad and then ultimately saw him make his first appearance of the season against West Ham United at Old Trafford.
Fans love Schweinsteiger and the work ethic he has shown despite the adversity he’s faced and speaking about his future, Mourinho intimated he didn’t expect him to leave the club in the January transfer window.
“Our number of players is not so big, even Schweinsteiger is back to the group with exactly that intention, he’s one more option for us,” he said.
“I do [expect him to stay come February].
“Unless the player knocks on our door with a future he wants to grab with both hands, then I never stop players doing what they want – if, I repeat, the conditions for the club are the right conditions.”
I’ve said it plenty of times but Schweinsteiger is a much better option than Marouane Fellaini at United, so I’d much rather see him come on to help us see games out than the Belgian and Mourinho has obviously seen something in Bastian which has earned him another chance – a fresh start?
There are still doubts in my mind over whether Schweinsteiger will still be a United player in January but Mourinho’s comments indicate he’s not in a rush to let him go. In that respect, it would be up to Bastian and whether he wanted to leave.
As fans, we’re all just happy the messy Schweinsteiger situation has had a positive outcome and there is every chance he’ll be involved in this busy December period. Hell, maybe he’ll even grab a goal!
