Manchester United have expressed an interest in acquiring the services of Atletico Madrid transfer guru Andrea Berta to Old Trafford, according to agent Dario Canovi.
Berta has played a fundamental part in Atletico Madrid’s transformation from mid-table minnows to La Liga champions, working closely with Diego Simeone and overseeing important signings such as Antoine Griezmann, Mario Mandzukic and Jackson Martinez in recent years.
Mourinho has been linked with Berta – who maintains a close relationship with Jorges Mendes, the Portuguese’s super-agent –
Canovi, who represents Paris Saint Germain and Italy midfielder Thiago Motta, told Calciomercato that Man United remain keen on luring Berta to Manchester.
“[Inter also signing Berta] would be an excellent idea, a plausible and logical scenario were Simeone to want to move to Milan,” he said.
“Although it would be far from simple. You must believe me: the best clubs in the world want Berta, the big English teams as well and not just Manchester United. Everyone has noticed his qualities.
“I told Siena to recruit him, telling club president Massimo Mezzaroma of his enormous qualities. With him, they would have been saved but they went with someone else and a year later they were relegated. That would not have happened with Berta.”
Mourinho’s tumultuous last few months at Chelsea were largely predicated by his toxic relationship with sporting director Michael Emenalo, who failed to oversee any of the 53-year-old’s handpicked targets ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.
Such a meltdown in relations would not happen with Berta. This is a man trusted and admired by Mendes, with a sensational track record at Atletico for several years. I mean, how many Simeone signings that you can think of have significantly underwhelmed? Even Fernando Torres has played well since joining on a free transfer.
United fans will be keen to see whether Berta joins up with Ed Woodward and Co. over the next few months.
