Memphis Depay has claimed that he is waiting for the completion of his move to Everton in January.
The Dutchman hasn’t made a Premier League start under Jose Mourinho this season, making just seven appearances – six of which being from the bench – in all competitions.
It has been reported that Ronald Koeman was keen on luring the ostracised winger to Everton during the January transfer window.
Memphis posted a Snapchat video with Everton striker Romelu Lukaku on Thursday night, issuing a cryptic message ahead of his probable move to Goodison Park, stating: “What’s up, guys? We’re done, we don’t talk too much, just getting my work done, and waiting. Let’s get this.”
A move away from Old Trafford has been, for some time now, a matter of “when” rather than if for Memphis. The winger cuts an incongruous, dejected figure, reduced to the occasional confidence-sapped appearance from the bench under Mourinho.
His probable next destination – under the wing of Koeman at Everton – makes perfect sense. His introduction to PSV Eindhoven’s youth system coincided with the manager’s first year in charge of the Dutch side, and injury to Yannick Bolasie – which looks set to leave the winger out for months – only intensifies Everton’s need for a dynamic, unpredictable force on the flank.
Everton need someone like Memphis – an internationally recognised figure with plenty of talent. And Memphis, deprived of confidence after a gloomy 18 months at Old Trafford, needs a fresh start.
