Stories emerged on Monday from Portugal reporting that Benfica president Luis Felipe Vieira was in Manchester on Monday to help finalise a deal bringing Eric Lindelof to Manchester United.
Lindelof, 22, has been a key figure at centre-back for Benfica this season and it’s an area which Jose Mourinho will be looking to strengthen over the next two transfer windows, which means we could well see a new defender arrive in January.
The first to be really heavily linked with a move to Man United is Lindelof and with that in mind we took a look at a starting XI with the Swedish defender in to see what our starting XI could look like.
I haven’t personally seen much of Lindelof but having watched a couple of Benfica games this year as well as Sweden at Euro 2016, I could see straight away that he’s a powerful and aggressive defender in the same mould as Eric Bailly. We’ve seen just how important that re-introduction of aggression has been, Lindelof falls into that same mould.
Add to that the fact we’d then have Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo as defensive cover. That’s two natural centre-backs for each position and a third utility for cover – some serious options available for Mourinho. I suppose that would then beg the question as to whether United need to sign a new centre-back? Leave your thoughts on that in the comments.
