Jose Mourinho has demonstrated his understanding of what Manchester United fans really want to see, noting that winning with style – and not just winning – is what matters at Old Trafford.
Man United encountered a rocky start to life under Mourinho, failing to translate a number of dominant performances against lesser Premier League sides into wins.
However, Mourinho’s men have mounted something of a resurgence in recent weeks, extending their unbeaten run to ten games following a comfortable 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.
The 53-year-old, speaking after the game against Tony Pulis’ side, outlined the importance of winning games in the right way at United.
“At some clubs it is to win that matters,” he said. “At this club, it is how you win.”
Mourinho’s record at Old Trafford – at this stage – may not be much better than that of his two predecessors. One crucial difference, however, is that the Portuguese really does understand the stated values underpinning this club.
Critics can point the finger at United’s points tally under Mourinho. What they can never question is the style he has implemented: fast, dynamic, always on the front foot, creating chance after chance. This is the type of football United fans want to see. This side continues to learn, and set-backs are inevitable. But when Mourinho’s men find their groove, the end result is scintillating.
