Saying the deal to take Lindelof to Manchester is practically done, they report the fee could rise to €60m depending on bonuses and that the clubs are already deep in discussions to finalise the deal. Furthermore, they support claims on Monday from fellow Portuguese newspaper O Jogo that Benfica president was in Manchester on Monday to discuss terms with Man United.
The Lindelof to United story began in earnest back in November when his agent intimated he was good enough for United and although he followed it up only a week later by saying the Swedish centre-back was happy at Benfica, it’s clear he was doing his job as an agent and garnering interest either to earn his client a new contract or a big move. If reports are correct, it’s going to be the latter and Jose Mourinho will be signing his first Portuguese player.
As good as United’s has been at points this season, I don’t think anybody will argue that it isn’t the weakness in our team. Late goals against Everton, Arsenal and Stoke City have directly cost us points already this year as well as a host of other defensive collapses, most spectacularly the 4-0 loss away at Chelsea. It’s a key area which needs improved.
Will Lindelof be that improvement which Mourinho wants to bring in to the club? There is certainly gathering momentum behind this story and all of the Portuguese sports outlets are reporting same thing – that Lindelof will be joining United in January.
