Benfica legend Antonio Veloso has appeared to confirm Victor Lindelof’s move to Manchester United as he insisted the club were sorry to see him leave.
The 22-year-old has been heavily linked with an Old Trafford move and is believed to be close to sealing a £42million January transfer.
Benfica boss Rui Vitoria has already talked about the prospect of losing the defender and claims the club would not be impacted by his loss in the transfer market.
Speaking about his transfer, Veloso insists he is a solid investment and is sorry to see him leave the club.
“It’s no surprise to me that Lindelof is being transferred,” said Veloso.
“I just did not know if it would be now or at the end of the season, since there was strong interest from Manchester United and other clubs.
“He is an important player in Benfica, but the team has other high-quality ones like Jardel or Lisandro, and does not lose.
“But we are sorry to see him leave, of course.”
A deal has already allegedly been met between both parties and he will be playing his last game for Benfica on Wednesday afternoon before heading to Manchester next month.
He has emerged as one of Europe’s most promising centre-backs and will undoubtedly boost our squad and take control of our makeshift defence.
Lindelof is a seriously reliable centre-back and with Eric Bailly out for a month at the Africa Cup of Nations, it’ll be great to have him in the side should a deal go through.
