Porto interested in signing Memphis Depay – report

Porto have expressed an interest in signing Memphis Depay on loan for the rest of the season, according to reports from Portugal.

The Dutchman, who has failed to make a Premier League start this season, has been strongly linked with a move to Everton in January, with Ronald Koeman confirming the club’s desire to acquire the winger’s services.

However, Porto are keen on finding a replacement for the in-form Yacine Brahimi, who will depart for the African Cup of Nations in the next few weeks.

And according to Jan Hagen, Porto manager Nuno Espírito Santo has pin-pointed Memphis as an ideal option.

Memphis, above anything, needs minutes on the pitch. He hasn’t managed a full 90 minutes in a Manchester United shirt all season, and his last appearance dates back to an eight minute cameo against Feyenoord in late November.

Porto serves as a superb option for the 22-year-old: Portugal’s domestic league notably lacks the same physical emphasis and defensive rigidity as the Premier League, and could be seen as a step down. But perhaps this is what the confidence-sapped Dutchman needs: an opportunity to wreak havoc against a few lesser sides, restoring some much needed belief and returning to Old Trafford next summer with a renewed appetite for the game.
