Michael Carrick produces complete display against Reading

Michael Carrick treated Manchester United fans to a simply sensational midfield performance during their side’s 4-0 win over Reading in the FA Cup on Saturday.

The 35-year-old once again displayed his usual poise at the base of midfield, controlling proceedings alongside Marouane Fellani, whilst also producing a series of magnificent balls forward.

A glance at his stats shed light on what was a truly magnificent performance.

Man United’s incredible record with Carrick in the starting XI continues: 15 games, 13 wins, no defeats and 39 goals scored. No side has managed to take control of a game against Mourinho’s men this season with the Englishman at the base of midfield, and as Reading – following a truly woeful first 20 minutes – looked to assert themselves, Carrick was there to foil them, picking up loose balls and setting up attacks.

Indeed, this has been the pattern for any side unlucky enough to face the midfielder this season: look to attack, lose the ball, and listlessly watch on as Carrick resumes his domination.

Taking on Carrick is, above anything, an exhausting exercise, and the game against Jaap Stam’s side saw Carrick hallmark his usual poise with a number of gorgeous passes in behind the defence, including a spectacular assist for Marcus Rashford‘s goal.
