Paul Merson: Jose Mourinho must start Michael Carrick in every Man United game

Paul Merson believes Jose Mourinho must select Michael Carrick in every match for Manchester United.

Man United are currently unbeaten in 14 games across all competitions and have won their last eight games in a row, which is their best form since back in 2009.

The Englishman has cemented his place in the side since November and United have not lost a single game with Carrick in the centre of the park, with 14 wins and two draws.

Speaking about his impact, Merson believes Mourinho needs to be utilising his skill set all the time.

“I think he’s (Jose Mourinho) got his team now at Manchester United,” he said.

“He knows what his team is going to be.

“Pogba’s playing a lot further up the pitch, when Carrick plays they move the ball a lot quicker.

“I think he needs to play all the time.”

Carrick started the FA Cup tie with Reading this afternoon and lasted 78 minutes before he was replaced by Timothy Fosu-Mensah, most likely for Mourinho to give him a rest before the clash against Hull City in the League Cup on Tuesday.

There were worries Carrick wouldn’t be able to continue following a clash of heads where he recieved off the field treatment, but he fought until the end and picked up a brilliant assist in Marcus Rashford‘s goal.

It’s clear he’s having a massive impact at Old Trafford and there’s no doubt Mourinho will continue to play him in as many games as possible while he still has the 35-year-old’s services at United.
