Wayne Rooney is just one goal away from breaking the record after equalling Sir Bobby Charlton’s 43-year-record of 249 goals for United in the 4-0 victory over Reading.
Marcus Rashford has enjoyed a spectacular breakthrough at Old Trafford and picked up two well-deserved goals in the win on Saturday evening.
Speaking about the youngster, Mourinho believes he has the potential to become a United great.
“Marcus, he is 19,” he said. “If he plays at Manchester United until the end of his career, maybe Marcus can do it, but Rooney scored a lot of goals.
“I don’t know the distances, really, but I think the ones that are close to the record are players that have left United already. So, especially in modern football, I see it as being really difficult.”
Rashford has continued to knock down all expectations of himself since his debut against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League in February, but it’s hard to believe how much he’s done in just under a year.
The 19-year-old has cemented his place in the first-team and has also managed to showcase his talent on the main stage for England, and if he’s this good now, it’s scary to think about what’s next.
