Andy Townsend: Victor Lindelof would be a brilliant player for Manchester United

by Leo Nieboer

Former Ireland midfielder Andy Townsend believes Victor Lindelof would be a fantastic player for Manchester United.

It was recently reported that a £42m deal in principle had been agreed between Benfica and Man United over the defender.

Further reports claimed that contractual disputes between Benfica and Vasteras over the ownership of a percentage of Lindelof’s resale value had halted the transfer going through, but it was later confirmed that such a dispute had been resolved.

And Townsend, speaking to Radio 5 Live, claimed the 22-year-old would be a welcome addition to Mourinho’s squad.

Victor Lindelof is a very good player – I’ve watched him an awful lot,” he said.

“He’s a very comfortable player, probably more comfortable with the ball at his feet than any other centre-half they have in their squad.

“I feel they lack a genuine leader, the sort of player United have had like Bruce or Stam where you looked at them and knew exactly what you were getting.

“I look at some of those United players and I’m not sure what I’m going to get.”

Lindeolof, even at the age of 22, has already demonstrated signs of real maturity at Benfica. His supreme composure on the ball, raw power and passing ability radically belies his age, and established strikers such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic – who played alongside the youngster at Euro 2016 – and Robert Lewandowski have heaped praise on the Swede following a sensational 2015/16 campaign.

Jose Mourinho has already confirmed that no new signings would arrive this month, but United fans will be keen to see whether this ‘in principle’ deal materialises into anything more concrete over the summer.
