Gary Pallister: Jose Mourinho should sign Patrice Evra at Man United

Former Manchester United centre-back Gary Pallister believes Jose Mourinho should bring Patrice Evra back to Old Trafford during the January transfer window.

The Frenchman, following eight years at the club, departed Old Trafford in 2014 and joined Juventus for £1.5m. He has made 79 appearances for the Old Lady, claiming four major honours in the process.

It has been reported in recent weeks that Evra, now 35, had expressed a desire to end his career at Man United.

And Pallister, speaking to 888 Sport, supported the idea of Evra returning to work under Mourinho.

“He was very popular with the fans and he’s a great lad,” Pallister said.

“He’s got bundles of energy and would be a great character to have in there but he’s at a certain age now.

“The left-back spot is there to be grabbed though because Luke Shaw has been injured and Darmian has had to fill in despite being right-footed.

“Blind has played there as has Rojo and there is talk of Rose and Walker at Tottenham being potential targets. So the full-back positions are not nailed down.”

Many supporters have expressed concerns about a potential move back to Old Trafford for Evra. He is, after all, approaching the latter stages of his career, and his move away from Manchester in the first place was predicated by the fact that he was beginning to struggle with the tempo of English football. Whether he really could have an impact once again remains to be seen.

One thing that Evra’s presence would guarantee, however, is a monumental injection of spirit and energy at Carrington. There aren’t many currently available players who genuinely understood what playing for United under Sir Alex Ferguson meant back in the glory days, but the Frenchman is one of them, and his influence amongst this current group of players could be invaluable.
