There will always be moments during a season where a side desperately, desperately needs a goal – moments where you appear to be staring down the barrel of despair. In those moments you need somebody – anybody – to stand up and land a crucial punch. And for Jose Mourinho and United that man, once again, was Zlatan.
Defeat to Liverpool was simply unthinkable, but following 80 agonising, unfruitful minutes you could tell that Old Trafford, now used to set-backs like these, was slowly coming to terms with the ignominy that would follow at full time.
But Ibrahimovic, a powerful, composed figure all afternoon, was having none of it. This was another game that didn’t see the Swede receive any clear cut chances, but when one finally came his way he duly made it count, leaping back like a salmon to guide home a header past a hoard of Liverpool shirts, and in turn saving Mourinho’s men from completely losing sight of the top five.
