Lionel Messi has revealed Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is the best English player he has ever faced.

He has played against the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes in in the UEFA Champions League, but highlighted Rooney as the English player that stood out the most.

He’s close to breaking Man United’s goal scoring record and is level with Sir Bobby Charlton on 249 competitive goals for the club following his goal against Reading in the FA Cup third round.

Speaking about Rooney, Messi claimed he had a big respect for the Englishman.

“Over the years we have faced many British teams in Europe and come up against many good players, but I have always had a big respect for Wayne Rooney,” Messi said.

“He has played at the highest level for many years and is one of the special players of the generation.”

He arrived at Old Trafford in 2004 and has achieved things that not many players can boast, he’s won everything there is to win in football and has enjoyed a remarkable career at United.

Although his performances have dipped in recent years, Rooney has played a vital role at United and will always be remembered as a United legend once he decides to leave.
