Lyon reach agreement with Memphis Depay on personal terms – report

Olympique Lyonnais have agreed personal terms on a contract with Memphis Depay according to reports from L’Equipe in France.

The French newspaper reports that negotiations with Memphis over his terms had been successful but the biggest hurdle remains with agreeing on a fee with Manchester United. Having had bids of €12m and €15m turned down, a new €17m bid is being lined up but that still falls way short of the £31m we paid for Memphis in 2015.

Man United dug their heels in with Morgan Schneiderlin until a deal worth £20m, rising to £24m with add-ons, was agreed and Memphis finds himself in the same situation. Unless Lyon can come up with an offer which matches United’s expectations then the Dutchman will not be moving anywhere.

The Memphis situation is one which I am particularly frustrated about. I was more excited about the signing of Memphis than I was of Angel di Maria because bringing in young players with prodigious talent and watching them grow is what I enjoy seeing most at United, rather than seeing ready made world-class players in their pomp come to the team. Not to say I don’t enjoy that but nothing beats seeing a player grow into a star at United.

Unfortunately for Memphis it just hasn’t worked out. He hasn’t had a huge amount of opportunity but when he has he’s simply not done enough and even Memphis would admit that. Jose Mourinho froze him out since the start and an exit does look inevitable but as I said only if Lyon can agree with United on a fee.

At this stage, if personal terms are agreed then that would be with Memphis’ agent but so long as a fee can be found then it looks like Memphis will be leaving United less than two years after he signed.
