Diego Simeone has said he won’t tie down Antoine Griezmann at Atletico Madrid amid heavy rumours linking him with a move to Manchester United.
Griezmann has been the subject of intense speculation this week after various reports, which began with The Independent’s Miguel Delaney saying Man United were ‘widely expected to sign Griezmann’, came out in the British and Spanish press.
Having been named the best player at Euro 2016, Griezmann is one of the best attackers in world football and Simeone has no intention of holding him at Atletico Madrid if he doesn’t want to be there.
Speaking about Griezmann, Simeone said: “I don’t tie anybody down, I simply keep working to continue getting better for the sake of the club.
“He is in an extraordinary moment, is working well, has got back on the scoresheet and his form is good.
“It is normal that the best teams in the world want him. I am not surprised that the teams who are looking are the ones who can afford him.”
Griezmann has been fantastic at Atletico ever since he joined from Real Sociedad and has gone on to become a more prolific goalscorer than Sergio Aguero, Diego Costa and Fernando Torres at Atletico in terms of goals-to-minutes ratio with 51 goals in 92 appearances.
United brought in Griezmann’s close friend Paul Pogba during the summer and are expected to go after Griezmann when the 2017 summer window comes around. With Atletico’s current financial and political problems (click here to read more on that topic), United could be in a strong position to bring him in as well but it all depends on whether the player would want the move.
Having been named as the richest club in football once again, United’s finances are in healthy shape and with Pogba at the club there’s a strong lure for Griezmann other than the fact he’d been playing at United under Jose Mourinho. Now that Simeone has said he wouldn’t keep Griezmann unless he wants to be there, expect the transfer rumours to become even more intense.
