Phil Jones: Timothy Fosu Mensah will be a great player for Manchester United

by Leo Nieboer

Phil Jones has insisted that Timothy Fosu-Mensah has what it takes to succeed at Manchester United.

The Dutchman enjoyed a sensational breakthrough campaign under Louis van Gaal, displaying impressive levels of power and athleticism during the latter stages of the season.

Fosu-Mensah was rewarded for his endeavours with a four-year contract back in October, but the 18-year-old hasn’t made a start under Jose Mourinho since.

But Jones, despite the youngster’s recent absence from the starting XI, told ManUtd.com that Fosu-Mensah will morph into a sensational talent at Old Trafford in the coming years.

“[He is] a good young player and another who is quick and good with both feet,” he said. “He’s someone that is improving all the time and he’ll be a good player for this club.”

You can tell that Fosu-Mensah, prior to breaking into the first team, enjoyed a unique footballing education. He started life as an aspirational footballer with Ajax and, in keeping with the club’s philosophy, quickly mastered a number of positions before prospering under Warren Joyce, learning various important tenets of the English game.

Such an upbringing has given the teenager a valuable mixture of steel and versatility, but latter trait could prove to be a potential stumbling block. Players are far more likely to make it at the highest level if they master one position, as opposed to being competent in several roles. And Fosu-Mensah – a central midfielder by trade but used primarily as a defender since arriving in Manchester – will need to decide what role suits him best going forward under Mourinho.
